Bradford Bulls had several representatives at the Rugby League World Cup, but unfortunately none were able to leave Australia with the trophy in their hands. England’s rather abject performances garnered just one narrow win over Papau New Guinea from their four matches, which included a 52-4 thrashing by the hosts and two reversals against eventual champions New Zealand. Of Bradford Bulls’ English contingent, only Jamie Langley and Paul Sykes were chosen for the travelling squad, and Tony Smith sparsely used both.
Other Odsal players fared better for their respective nations, with David Solomona impressing for Samoa, and Semi Tadulala helping his country Fiji to reach the semi-final stage. If anything, the tournament outcome has injected life into the international game, with the Australian stranglehold on the competition finally broken. A pulsating final illustrated the enormous potential of multi-national rugby league as the Kiwis triumphed 34-20 to sting the bookmakers. At least one Englishman took part, however- video referee Steve Ganson grabbed the headlines after awarding a (deserved) penalty try in the closing stages.
Looking to the 2009 Super League season, Bradford and Harlequins RL will kick things off a week earlier than the other teams at the Stoop on 8th February. Bulls’ four new signings will all look to factor in the opening game in an early chance to win over the travelling fans. Nick Scruton will be familiar to most supporters due to his time at Leeds, but the prop has made the short trip across the M62 and will wear the Bradford No. 17 from next year. Hometown boy Rikki Sheriffe will get the chance to play in front of his family and friends on the right wing at the Grattan Stadium, and will wear No. 2 shirt. 22 year old Michael Worrincy will also be closer to home and may figure against is previous club Harlequins in the opening game. The versatile second rower can also figure at prop and has a bright future. Finally, Australian legend Steve Menzies will bring his 34 years of experience to the side and look to add to the 180 tries he scored in the NRL for Manly and Northern Eagles, the last of which was a touchdown for Manly in their victorious Grand Final appearance this year. Join me again in February for a comprehensive insight into Super League XIV.
