The Bull Pen May 09.....Written by James McCann

Bulls fans have endured another topsy-turvy month, as a magical win over Leeds was offset by tame defeats against Catalans, Wakefield and fellow strugglers Warrington.

Bradford once again went out of the Challenge Cup at the first hurdle on 5th April, when defeated 40-38 in a thrilling encounter against the Catalans Dragons. The long journey home for the Bulls faithful will have seemed particularly arduous, as their side squandered a 26-0 lead in a second half littered with errors. Despite tries from seven different players and five Paul Deacon goals, the French side manage to progress to the fourth round of the competition.

Bradford fans were rewarded for their perseverance on 10th April, with arguably the side's best performance in years against bitter rivals Leeds Rhinos. The reigning champions visited Odsal full of confidence after an impressive start to the season, but the home side edged a bruising encounter 10-6, denying the Rhinos the chance to return to the summit of Super League. A game full of controversial refereeing decisions - most of which went in Bulls' favour - was eventually settled by Rikki Sheriffe's try, with the winger judged to have caught Ben Jeffries' bomb without dropping the ball.

The Easter cheer was not to last, however, as a trip to Belle Vue eventually proved fruitless for Bradford on 13th April. A hot-blooded West Yorkshire derby against Wakefield saw Australian veteran Steve Menzies grab two impressive tries for the visitors, but the Wildcats held on for a narrow 24-22 victory. April's hard work was finally undone on the 17th, when the Bulls suffered an embarrassing home defeat against a Warrington side who were second-bottom of the table before the game. Bradford again registered 22 points on the scoreboard, but the Wolves tore the Bulls pack apart and racked up 58 points in what amounted to a rout. Things do not get any easier for the side, either - the next game is a daunting trip to Knowsley Road to take on runaway league leaders St Helens.
