Business Watch... Future Balti -Written by James McCann
This month’s Business Watch takes on a slightly different flavour, in the form of a restaurant review. The venue in question was Wibsey’s own Future Balti House, something of a culinary institution in the area and sampled by my partner and myself on a Friday evening. After a brief walk down the High Street, we were greeted inside with a warm welcome by the staff and proprietor Ali. We took our seats in the contemporary and recently refurbished restaurant area and perused the menu as we tasted the complimentary chapattis and yoghurt and spice selection. We settled for ordering a mixed vegetable starter comprising of potato bhajis, vegetable samosas, mushroom bhajis and onion bhajis, a generous portion of which was soon brought to the table. Having never sampled mushroom bhaji myself I immediately chose this and was very impressed, and indeed found that all three bhaji items offered contrasting tastes that complimented each other. The potato bhaji in particular was cooked to perfection and crumbled in the mouth. Along with a very tasty samosa, it is fair to say that the first course left us greatly anticipating the main. On the recommendation of our waiter I decided on the house signature dish, the ‘balti-e-future’- a combination of meats and spices intended to utilise ingredients and showcase the talents of the chefs. And it succeeded, I assure you. Along with peshwari naan (containing sultanas), the dish was a delight to eat and comes highly recommended. My partner meanwhile chose to take advantage of the innovative ‘make your own balti’ option, selecting chicken, mushrooms, spinach and coriander cooked to a medium strength, with pilau rice as an accompaniment. As we sampled each other’s food, I again found it to be a very tasty option, and surely an appealing one to those who like to specify exactly what they eat. After satiating our senses and appetites it was time to leave, but I am sure we will return. Even for those in a hurry, Future Balti has a take-away and home delivery service at the same very reasonable prices, so there really is no excuse not to venture down Wibsey High Street today!
