Times Gone By

The Red Lion Inn

The old Red Lion Inn used to be in a block of buildings near to the old Manor House, Lower Wyke.

Records of Public Houses prior to 1830 are scare. An Act of Parliament passed in that year prohibited Public Houses from opening all night, with stricter rules from then on.
The Red Lion was moved to the junction of the A58 when Huddersfield Road was built. (See the aerial photograph left.) At that time the licensee was Anthony Collins.

The pub was renamed as Rubys, but is now known as the Wyke Lion.

Pictured right is Matthew Crofts, Manager of the Wyke Lion today. He says, “The pub is thriving we provide a friendly atmosphere and have plenty of loyal customers. We get people from as far as Dalton and Kirkheaton as well as those from the Wyke area.”
